To start a bid on a player, click Create Thread in the Free Agency Bidding folder. To bid on a player someone else has already bid on, reply in that thread.
From the PM Pucks Constitution:
5c. Free agency periods begin at a yet-to-be-determined date in the offseason. (This season it is Saturday September 7 at 3 pm ET - bids submitted before then will be reversed.) All owners are allowed to offer any free agent a contract. If that contract offer stands for 48 hours (2 days) the player will sign that offer.
5d. A contract offer of equal length must best a previous offer of the same length by at least 10% per annum (a one-year-deal at $1 would need to be followed by a one-year offer of $1.1). However offering more years would allow you to simply equal the yearly salary (a two, three, four or five-year deal at $1 would best a shorter deal at $1/year). To best a longer offer, the annual salary would need to be increase by 20% for one year (five years to four years, four to three, three to two, two to one) 30% for two years (five to three, four to two, three to one), 40% for three years (five to two, four to one), or 50% for four (five to one). Note that you can also use the Free Agency Calculator to determine minimum bids at pm402salary.50webs.com/fa_salary.html
5e. Player salaries are determined by the multiplication of the previous year’s total production based on the scoring system and then multiplied by the following numbers: More than 1200: 0.014758333; 1101-1200: 0.0140181818; 1001-1100: 0.01313; 901-1000: 0.0120444; 801-900: 0.0106875; 701-800: 0.0089428571; 601-700: 0.0066666; 501-600: .0065; 401-500: 0.00625; 201-400: 0.0058333.
5f. It is incumbent on the owner placing a bid to ensure its legality. It is also incumbent on the owner who has been outbid to ensure the bid that topped his was legal as well. The league will attempt to catch all illegal bids but if one goes unnoticed it will be voided and go back to the previous high bid. If that bid has stood for 72 hours it will be considered signed without restarting the clock.
NEW following rules update: An illegal bid can be a bid that does not follow the requirements listed in 5d. It can also be for a bid that would place a team over the limit in terms of maximum cap amount ($105 mil) or roster spaces (35) on any day of free agency if all of the outstanding bids were to be successful. There is a hard cap on both with no contingency plans, even if stated explicitly. Treat this as if this were a live auction draft, where the software won't allow you to bid over the cap or maximum players.
5g. All one-year (1/1) contracts signed in the offseason are guaranteed until Week 6 of the Regular Season. These players cannot be cut until the beginning of Week 7. If the contract is multiple years (1/2, 2/2, etc.), it requires a buyout. FAAB contracts that are 1/1 can be dropped at any time, though.
Some notes:
1. Remember that a bid is a binding contract. So before you bid, make sure of the following:
a) That the bid is legal (see above) - must be to the penny so there are no disputes later
b) That you have the cap space ($) and roster space (# of players) to be able to honor the bid along with other highest bids that you have made
c) That you fully intend to stand behind the bid (ie. you understand that you cannot reverse it later because you found another player that you'd rather own)
Any teams that require league intervention as a result of overspending may be subject to a league fine that will lower the team's cap limit for the season. If you believe you might be in danger of this, please consult with the league commissioner as early as possible to discuss options.
As well, remember it is now illegal to engage in bid spamming (ie. bidding on 20 players if you only have room for 10, or making $50 million worth of bids if you have only $30 million in cap space), even if you figure you will be outbid on some of those bids. Teams should be cap compliant and roster compliant at any given moment. The likelihood of something going wrong early on or with small bids is very low, but this has been a problem in the past when the stakes seem to get higher and the bids get larger (and the tempers get shorter!)
2. Although the league will do its best to determine the validity of all bids, the official onus is on those bidding and those being outbid to make sure what's offered was legal. If you have a question, ask. If an illegal bid is made, the bidding will revert to the previous high bid and its original time schedule as far as signing is concerned. If the bidding window for the previous high bid would have closed the PLAYER WILL SIGN THAT DEAL.
So if you're outbid, make sure it's legit. You could get stuck with a guy you didn't think you were getting if you don't pay attention. Again, if you think it's close, ask.
3. You may not offer a long term deal if you don't have one available. Meaning if I have three 3/3* guys on my team right now, I can't offer a player a 3/3* in free agent bidding.
4. Know how many roster spots you have open and how many guys you can sign. Having at least three "flexible" roster spots entering the season is recommended - either empty or players signed to one-year deals.
5. Be mindful that player threads might already exist elsewhere. We're going to have a ton of ongoing bids at the same time, make sure you search for your player before you start a new thread.
6. It will be up to the team holding the hometown discount to note that they have this discount and that they are matching an offer (they can exceed the offer as well if they wish). If there is any doubt who holds a hometown discount (the last team to own that player), that can be found by switching to the previous year on your team page. Also note that players whose contracts were bought out in the same offseason will not be eligible for a hometown discount.
Good luck. Have fun. And don't forget about fair play and sportsmanship. We are all aiming to make our teams better, but remember that this is just a game.
